Hello Everyone!
PLEASE READ TO BOTTOM OF PAGE BEFORE ATTENDING A WATER PRACTICE! (it's long) Our practice location will be at Hobie Beach this year. As you enter and pay for entrance to the park, proceed to the stop sign, make a right turn and proceed to the Paradise Cove parking lot. There is a concrete path from the parking lot to Hobie Beach. It is a bit of a trek so a cart of some sort is recommended to haul your stuff in and out. See the Calendar of Events for practice and trial dates. Anyone attending our practices is required to sign the Water Practice Agreement. Please read and sign the agreement and bring it with you to the first practice you attend or you may mail it to Susan Cucura, if you prefer. We have a full water season scheduled this year! Please check our website Calendar of Events before attending any practices to make sure that the practice is on. Note, if the forecast is for 105 degrees or higher, practice will be cancelled. We will try to alert you all via email if anything changes but the website will also be updated if there is a change. No one will be allowed to practice without signing the Water Practice Agreement first. Looking forward to another great year at the lake. Please contact Susan Cucura at: [email protected] if you have any questions. |

Water Practice Guidelines- Please read carefully before coming to practice!
Because we are on a year-to-year approval basis and our permit can be revoked at any time, it is critical for every person who comes to the lake for water practice, or to our water trials, to follow all rules listed in the Water Practice Agreement.
Please understand that when you are asked to do something by park staff or club members, it is to make sure we are in compliance with our permit. Please help us ensure that we can continue to have the privilege of using the lake by abiding by the rules.
Who can come? Anyone can come to our water practices, however only Portuguese Water Dogs are allowed in the water. We love seeing our SCPWDC members working their dogs. We also welcome any other PWD owners who wish to join us. This is a water practice for Portuguese Water Dogs to learn the exercises required in order to participate in water trials. This is not a forum for a play date or letting your dogs play in the water.
Water Practice Fees: The cost for SCPWDC club members is $15 for the first dog and $10 for each additional dog per day. The fee for non-SCPWDC club members is $20 for the first dog and $15 for each additional dog per day. PLEASE BRING EXACT CHANGE FOR YOUR PRACTICE FEES OR YOU MAY WRITE A CHECK TO: SCPWDC. We will not make change.
When you arrive at water practice, please first sign in on the clipboard and pay your practice fee prior to putting your dog in the water. There will be one designated person who will be in charge of the sign-in sheet and taking money. Just ask around once you arrive.
Safety Equipment: Every person who is near the water must wear a life jacket (PFD) and closed-toed water shoes. If you bring anyone who doesn’t typically come and they are at the water’s edge, they need to have on proper equipment. Absolutely no one is allowed on the boats without a life vest and closed-toed shoes. The club usually has extra life vests and various sizes of water shoes and extra equipment to lend if you’re a first-timer or if you forgot your equipment at home. Please ask if you need to borrow something.
Parking: For your convenience, we suggest you park in the lot nearest to Paradise Cove. Unload your equipment in the parking lot and follow the walking path that will easily take you to our beach – Hobie Beach. Do not drive on the walking path. There are no exceptions. Anyone found driving on the walking path will be asked to leave and will not be allowed to participate in any future water events.
Dog Containment: If you are bringing a dog, you must bring a crate or x-pen to contain it. If you bring more than one dog, it is essential that you bring a crate to keep the non-working dog contained. It is illegal at this park for your dog to be tied to a tree, or wandering up and down the beach while you are trying to work with your other dog. All dogs are to be on-leash AT ALL TIMES, unless working. If your dog is apt to take off running, a long line is required for the safety of your dog as well as the other dogs and handlers. If you need to borrow a long line, the club will provide one.
Boat Priority: The boats' usage is always at a premium. Please observe a 20-minute rule per person. You may work your dog on a boat for a 20-minute period and then allow the next person to use the boat. You may get back in line for use on the boat for another turn if you like. We are going to use the honor system for now. If we have lots of people stacking up, we may have to have a sign-up sheet and time clock (boy, I hope not).
Bitches in Season: BIS are welcome to come to water practice. Please advise us that you have a BIS. For your own safely, you may wish to work your BIS further down the beach to not cause a huge distraction to the intact males. We usually have 2 boats at each practice. We will designate one boat to be used by the BIS, and anyone else who wants to use it. But please don’t let your BIS on the other boat.!
And Finally: Everyone is expected to contribute to the practice group by helping with set up or take down, stewarding, rowing, etc., because we all know, it takes a community to train PWD water skills!
